I have always been into lifting and my girlfriend has been on me to run a half marathon. As you can imagine, from a life of lifting I’m not exactly swift like a deer if you know what I mean. What would be the best way to go about getting my wind and legs under me?

I can relate to this question. My years throughout college and after I rarely did any form of cardio exercise. I lifted weights several days a week and moved at a pretty fast clip when I was in the weight room, so I didn’t feel the need. More importantly, I just didn’t [...]

Is it true you burn more fat when you do cardio slow?
by Dr. Chad Kerksick on Jun 01, 2010, under The Professor
To some extent YES, this is true. This thought process has been used by bodybuilders for years as I remember people doing cardio at low intensities for 60, 70, even 90 minutes at a time. So where did this come from? From a physiology perspective, our body uses oxygen we breathe in through our lungs [...]

What is High Intensity Interval Training and Why Should I Consider Using It?
by Dr. Chad Kerksick on Apr 12, 2010, under Workouts
This is an exciting topic and relevant to any person who likes to challenge themselves and would like to increase their fitness and lose weight. For those that take it to heart, this type of training is not an easy street. If it came in a box, it would probably have a warning label. In [...]
I read on your blog that Ignition/Phormula-1 should not be used directly after a cardio workout. Why is this? I do a lot of running and I am trying to lose some weight. I do some lifting but I am really just trying to be lean and not looking to put on a lot of muscle. I guess my basic question is how should I be using Ignition/Phormula-1 most effectively if I do mostly cardio workouts?

First off, if you are looking at getting lean, putting on muscle should be a priority not an afterthought. If you want to be lean and you do just cardio you aren’t going to get there. Cardio burns both muscle and fat, not just fat like most people think. If you aren’t training your muscles [...]

H.I.I.T Me Baby! A Guide to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
by Phorm Athlete, Gillian Risebury on Dec 05, 2009, under Women's Fitness, Workouts
Hey everyone! I hope you are working your tails off to make sure you achieved all your goals for 2009! It’s almost time for a new year and a whole new set of resolutions! As for me, I got some amazing news this week—I was selected to receive a sponsorship for 2010 [...]
I have been walking for 45 minutes at a brisk pace every morning with good results. However, it seems like I’m not getting the results as quick as I was in the beginning. I have been following this regimen for six weeks; do I need to up the intensity for me to continue getting results?
by Chairman & CEO, Andrew Frisella on Jul 29, 2009, under Customer Q & A
That is exactly what you need to do! You are already walking for a pretty good amount of time, so you should increase the intensity in other ways. I would suggest you start doing intervals of running and walking. For example you can run for one minute and walk for two minutes. This will effectively [...]
I have read a lot of different things when it comes to the most effective cardio routine. I have heard from some that eating a little before you do cardio will help spare muscle. I have also heard that cardio on an empty stomach is the only way to go when it comes to fat loss. Which method is the best?
by Chairman & CEO, Andrew Frisella on Jun 24, 2009, under Customer Q & A
There are basically two schools of thought when it comes to doing cardio. One method, the old school method, is to do low-moderate intensity cardio for a 45-60 minute duration on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. This absolutely works. I have used it for myself and for clients for many years. There [...]
