LEVEL-1®

Just try it once! That’s all it takes to understand what makes Level-1 the world’s best protein. Level-1 is so delicious that you’ll wonder how you ever got by using anything else. Level-1 was designed from the ground up to be one thing: THE BEST.

Our goal was to create the best tasting, best mixing and most importantly highest-quality protein on the market BAR NONE! A year and over a hundred denied versions later: Mission Accomplished.

Level-1 is comprised of the Level-1 Matrix which is an ultra bio-available, sustained assimilation protein formula consisting of Cross-Flow Micro-Filtrated Whey Protein Isolate, Low Temperature Micro-Filtrated Whey Protein Concentrate, Low Temperature Processed Milk Protein Concentrate, Pure Egg Whites and Sodium Caseinate. The Level-1 Matrix is specifically formulated to deliver the highest quality, premium proteins in a sustained release which mimics the protein assimilation rates of whole food. Level-1 uses only proteins that have been low-temperature processed to take extra precaution to not denature or damage delicate protein fractions.

Level-1 contains among the highest levels of glutamine and glutamine peptides available in a protein supplement at over 4 grams per serving! Glutamine makes up roughly 61% of the amino acid pool in muscle tissue, which quite simply translates into an improved ability of your muscle to deal with stress and the daily beat down you put your muscles through. Level-1 is also rich in the Branched Chain Amino Acids, the “do-everything” amino acids so important to muscle.  They are anti-catabolic, which means they help prevent too much breakdown of muscle while also being THE triggers which turn on muscle growth while also being available as a valuable fuel source for your muscles in times of need.  Level-1 has over 5 grams of BCAA per scoop!

Level-1: Just try it once. That’s all it takes.

Frequently Asked Questions About LEVEL-1®

The cholesterol level looks a little high on the Level-1.  Is this something I should worry about?

Cholesterol is a by-product of using animal proteins (which is what whey protein is ... whey protein comes from whey, which comes from milk, which comes from cows).  Cholesterol is extracted or removed from protein by a process that essentially cooks it out (a high temperature process that denatures the protein). In a protein that is all low temperature processed, like Level-1, the cholesterol never bakes out because it's never exposed to heat in order to maintain the integrity of the proteins.  This is actually one really simple, tell-tale way to tell if a protein truly is low temperature processed and will be usable by your muscles for growth.

Can I use Level-1 after I workout?

Level-1 is designed to be a sustained-assimilating protein that is formulated and designed to mimic the digestion pattern of an actual meal. Level-1 contains a special blend of different protein sources with different assimilation rates to accomplish this. Level-1 is designed to be a daily use protein to ensure that you meet your body's protein needs on a day-to-day basis.  Post-workout is a different animal, though: You're body is looking for a rapid source of protein, and more importantly a rapidly assimilating source of carbohydrates.  For post-workout, Phormula-1® stacked with Ignition™ is better suited for your needs. While you can use Level-1 post workout (you can use whatever you want), the protein sources used in Level-1 are simply assimilated too slowly in your system to serve as ideal post-workout recovery. This is exactly why we developed Phormula-1®, it's a classic situation of just choosing the right tool for the right job.

For more in depth answer check out this Q&A from our blog on the same topic:  I have been using Level-1 and I love it! Can I use it with Ignition post-workout instead of Phormula-1 and get same results?

How many scoops of Level-1 do I need to take?

That depends on you and your diet!  Level-1 is a sustained assimilating protein that is designed to mimic the digestion of a real meal and help you meat your caloric and protein needs on a daily basis.  It is designed to provide a steady flow of amino acids to your muscles to keep your body anabolic all day long.  That being said, everyone's needs are a little bit different and vary depending on their diet.  The easiest way to figure this out is to look at your whole food meals for the day and figure out how many grams of protein you have there compared to what your needs are and then "pick up the change" with Level-1.  For most males, this ends up being 1-2 Level-1 shakes a day of 2 scoops each, and for most females 1-2 Level-1 shakes a day of 1 scoop, but again mileage will vary.

How much water should I mix with Level-1?

Level-1 should be mixed 1 rounded (heaping) scoop of water per 4 ounce of cold water.  After mixing Level-1 that way the first time, if you'd like your shakes a little thicker in consistency you can decrease the amount of fluid you use and if you'd like them a little thinner, you can increase the amount of fluid you use.  Doing this will not affect the performance of Level-1 in any way, it will only affect the consistency of your shakes.

Can I mix Level-1 with milk?

You certainly can.  Level-1 was formulated to mix and instantize into water, but you certainly can mix Level-1 with milk.  This will change the texture a bit as it will be thicker and keep in mind that doing this also adds calories, as well as carbs and proteins, depending on what type of milk you mix it with.

Is this a good product for a bulking cycle?  There's not a lot of calories.

You are correct … There are not a lot of calories in Level-1.  Level-1 is not a "heavy weight gainer" and we certainly don't purport it to be one.  The problem with most "gainers" is that they are normally not nutritionally complete.  They include some low quality protein in them and are usually pumped full of sugars and fat in order to get the calories up … a far cry from balanced or nutritionally complete formulas.  We are actually working on a nutritionally complete weight gainer for the 1st Phorm® line right now, which will be based off the protein sources used in Level-1.  In the meantime, here's a little trick that you can use if you are trying to up your calories or carbs:  I throw a handful of raw oats in with my Level-1 shakes and include some flax oil.  This way you have everything you need (quality carbs + quality protein + healthy fats = quality gains) without all the extra junk or a product that is a bunch of cut corners.  Try that and see what you think ... this is a quality alternative to classic "weight gainers" that will work great for you in the meantime.

Can my kids take Level-1?

They certainly can.  We get letters and feedback all the time from fit parents who are trying to pass on their healthy habits with their children who tell us how much their kids love drinking Level-1. Because of the Low Temperature Processing of Level-1 you avoid that nasty protein after taste, which makes Level-1 perfect for kids. As you know, to get kids to drink it…it has to taste great!  Of course, you will want to adjust the dosing of the product accordingly.  Some children don't care for the tastes of protein sources such as beef, chicken, etc. when they are younger … but they always love chocolate!

Do I need Level-1 when I'm already using Phormula-1 after a workout?

Again, this all breaks down to your diet.  Phormula-1 is not a replacement for Level-1 and vice versa.  Each is designed and formulated for a different purpose.  Phormula-1 is formulated for rapid assimilation and to flood your muscles with amino acids post workout, whereas Level-1 is formulated as a daily use protein in conjunction with your diet to help you meet your protein needs each day and to provide a sustained, steady feed of aminos to your muscles all throughout the day.  It's a classic case of just choosing the right tool for the job at hand; When you gotta put a nail in a board, you don't grab a screwdriver.

Is Level-1 Lactose Free?

While our Phormula-1 protein is 100% lactose free, the Level-1 is a protein blend containing a variety of protein sources and does contain trace (very, very small) amounts of lactose.  The actual amount of lactose in Level-1 is only 0.2 grams per serving, which is very minimal.  Depending on the severity of your lactose allergy, you might or might not react adversely to that.

Why doesn't 1st Phorm make a RTD Level-1?

All the current technology for RTD production involves very high temperature extensive pasteurization designed to rid the product of all bioactive compounds, micro- organisms and pathogens in order to keep it from spoiling while it sits on a shelf for a year. The problem is you need the protein's bioactive compounds in order for the protein to do its job in your body.  Producing RTD's this way renders them useless. We are currently researching a way to do this where we could maintain the integrity of the protein fractions of the product.  Until we find an effective way to do that, there won't be a Level-1 RTD.  We refuse to just pump out a sub-par product with our name on it just for the sake of making money.

For more in depth answer check out this Q&A from our blog on the same topic: When are you guys going to come out with a Level-1 RTD (ready to drink) cooler drink? I love Level-1, but it’s inconvenient to mix up and an RTD would be so much better. I can’t wait for this to come out!

Should I use Phormula-1 or Level-1?  Which is better?

Phormula-1 vs Level-1 is not a matter of which one is better than the other.  Each was designed for a completely different purpose.  Phormula-1 is a rapid assimilating protein that was specifically formulated for use pre & post-workout in conjunction with Ignition, whereas Level-1 is designed as a sustained assimilating protein formulated for daily use to increase or maintain protein intake and provide a steady flow of amino acids.  Post-workout your body needs protein & nutrients fast; the rest of the day it functions better on a more sustained, steady feed of aminos to keep your body anabolic.

I'm a woman, do I need the Phormula-1 after my workout, or can I just take more Level-1?

Immediately before or after resistance training, Phormula-1 is always the protein of choice, regardless of gender.

For more in depth answer check out this Q&A from our blog on the same topic: Women and Protein Shakes: When and Why?

If I mix Level-1 in water and after I shake it, I leave it in the fridge for days, does that damage the protein?

It won't damage the protein … but it probably won't taste as great! I never let my Level-1 shakes sit in the fridge for any longer than an hour or so … and they rarely last that long (Level-1 tastes great - I don't waste any time drinking it!)  If you are going to mix some Level-1 up, just use the amount that you need each time.  If you are going to only drink 1 scoop of Level-1, just mix up one scoop. It only takes 30 seconds to mix a shake and you'll be much happier with the result.

If I use a blender to mix my Level-1, will that change the flavor?

Absolutely not.  Level-1 was formulated and designed to mix in water with just a simple shaker, but if you wish to mix it in blender, you are certainly free to do so.  Many people create their own smoothies and concoctions with Level-1 and use a blender to mix it all up.  There is absolutely no harm in that … just be sure to share the recipe with us!

Can I use Level-1 for post workout?

After resistance training, your body is looking for amino acids that it can get to and process very quickly.  For this, we always recommend Phormula-1, as that is exactly what it was designed for.  Level-1 is a sustained assimilation protein for you to use daily in between meals to help meet the protein needs of your diet. If you are looking for the best results, Phormula-1, which is a rapidly assimilating protein source, is ideal for proper post-workout nutrition.

For more in depth answer check out this Q&A from our blog on the same topic: When are you guys going to come out with a Level-1 RTD (ready to drink) cooler drink? I love Level-1, but it’s inconvenient to mix up and an RTD would be so much better. I can’t wait for this to come out!

What is the best time of the day to use Level-1?

Whatever time works out best for you! When you use Level-1 is really a matter of convenience more than anything.  We recommend for people to alternate in their Level-1 shakes between their whole food meals.  Ultimately, though, that's up to how it works out best for you.  Each of us has varying and busy schedules and our meals and training all fall at different times of the days. Sometimes you may do two Level-1 shakes back to back, or you may only do one Level-1 that day … it all depends on your personal schedule and how you want to work your meal plan. Try to squeeze Level-1 shakes in between meals, but that's not a fast and true schedule that you must stick to.

My trainer told me to take a protein shake each night before bed.  Can I use Level-1 for that?

Feeding the machine a Level-1 shake right before bed is a GREAT idea!  You'd want to use a sustained assimilating protein such as Level-1 to provide your body with a steady feed of aminos for hours at a time.  Not only will this help with late night cravings, Level-1 also provides your body with plenty of building materials to work with overnight.  While your body is indeed entering a resting state at night ... during sleep is also when a lot of muscle repair will occur.  When your body is sleeping at night and the other systems are "shut down" (sleeping), your body is able to focus more of its efforts on repairing all the micro-trauma that you created while training.  Adding a sustained assimilating protein shake such as Level-1 right before bed will be a very beneficial move for you.  After just a couple days you'll notice yourself waking up the next day feeling better and more rested and you'll see muscle soreness decrease.

For more in depth answer check out this Q&A from our blog on the same topic: My friend told me that I should be using time-released protein before I go to bed instead of regular protein. Is this really better than regular whey protein?

I thought isolate was fast digesting, so why is this ideal for before bed?

You are correct, isolate is a slightly faster digesting protein source.  While Level-1 does contain isolate, isolate is not the only component of Level-1.  Level-1 is a blend of several different types of protein that are designed to work synergistically with one another and create a sustained, steady stream of amino acids to feed your body for hours, or in this case, while you are sleeping.

Can I just use Level-1 all day instead of eating protein from whole food?

You could, but I would not recommend that for the main reason that you would probably be a lot more likely to get burned out and fall out of your routine all together.  Its also important to remember that your body needs the macronutrients and micronutrients found in healthy whole food sources in order to function at its optimal level.  Keep in mind that Level-1 is a dietary supplement and should be used exactly as that … to supplement your diet.  Level-1 is in no way intended to completely replace every meal in your diet.  If you are mixing more than 3 Level-1 shakes a day, I would re-evaluate your diet and work some more whole-food meals in there
